IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE - 2007-2008 model year TRX420FE/FM Rancher ATVs

June 2008

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

Dear TRX420 Rancher Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

What is the reason for this notice?

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

is conducting a safety recall of certain 2007-08 model year Honda TRX420FM and TRX420FE ATVs.

Our records indicate that you own one of these vehicles.

What is the problem?

If the rubber CV (constant velocity) boots get punctured or torn from trail hazards such as rocks and

fallen branches, the joint will become contaminated with dirt and other debris. This contamination,

combined with unique factors related to the design, lay-out, and manufacture of the outboard CV

joints (part of the front driveshaft assembly) as assembled onto your TRX420 could cause them to

bind. If the binding becomes severe, it may affect the rider’s ability to control the steering and could

lead to a crash in which the operator could be seriously injured or killed.

What should you do?

Honda recommends that you do not operate your TRX until the front driveshaft assemblies

have been replaced. During the month of July, Honda will begin to notify customers by mail that

parts are becoming available and they should contact an authorized Honda ATV dealer to have their

TRX420 Rancher repaired. We kindly request you wait for this 2nd letter before attempting to

schedule the repair. When the repair is scheduled, the dealer will replace both front driveshaft

assemblies free of charge.

If you must operate your TRX prior to repair you should frequently inspect the rubber CV boots. At a

minimum, you must inspect the boots before each ride.

Visual and Physical inspection of the CV Boots:

Park the TRX on a flat, hard surface, such as a driveway or hard-packed dirt surface. Turn the handlebars

to the left. With the handlebars turned to the left, closely inspect the left side outer rubber CV

boot, looking for holes or tears in the rubber material, using your fingers to inspect between the folds,

and ensuring that the CV boot clamps are secured. Slowly roll the ATV back and forth to inspect the

full circumference of the boot. Repeat the same procedure to the right side.

If you do not feel qualified to inspect your CV boots, please do not operate your TRX.
