Long Trail Ride Kit PDF Print E-mail

We covered the minimum trail kit in the article Basic Trail Kit. Now let's move on to bigger and better things.  Here is a more specific trail kit based upon criteria we covered in Trail Kit- The Intro. You will want to adjust what you carry based upon the riding you will be doing.  This list should get you started in the right direction. Many of these items are from trial and error on my part.  Some may read the list of these items and feel like it is over-kill to carry some of these things.  In many cases it may be. Again I would always rather have something and not need it than need something and not have it. You may be asking "where would I put all of this stuff?".  You would be amazed at how much stuff you can fit in a saddle bag or a hard case for an ATV.  Many ATVs have some storage you can fit a basic trail kit.  Remember that you will want to waterproof some of the items. A good way to carry smaller items you don't want to get wet is by using a plastic container like a zip lock which will seal air tight.  Then putting the items inside a zip lock bag inside the plastic container will protect them and keep them dry.  I lost a cell phone ($300 mistake) by not taking these precautions, so keeping my stuff dry became a priority.

The Long Trail Ride

This is the ride where you will be gone for several hours covering many miles of ground in remote areas.  Most of this riding is not in a private park, but on public land.  Something to consider on such a ride is what will you do if you break down or get lost.  Try to carry what you would need to get through one night of being stranded.

  1. Map or GPS (A GPS allows you always to get back the way you came)
  2. Extra fuel- Consider getting a flat fuel pack for long rides.
  3. Tire plugs
  4. Air pump
  5. Tow strap or rope
  6. Flashlight
  7. Tool Kit- Screwdrivers and common sockets that fit your ATV
  8. Zip ties
  9. Extra spark plug
  10. Hose clamps- Specific sizes which fit the hoses on your ATV
  11. Saddle bag or hard case
  12. Rain suit or poncho
  13. Matches
  14. Food and water
  15. Blanket
  16. Knife
  17. A water-proof case for your phone and camera Wink.

This is just a starting point to get you thinking about what you need to take on your ATV Adventures.  Feel free to leave comments below to let me know what else to add to the list. So get your trail kit and get out on the trail.
