Trail Kit- The Intro

Out on the trail it is important to be prepared for certain things that can happen as you are conquering the wild. Boy Scouts taught me to "always be prepared", and, when it comes to ATVing, I like to live by that rule. Being prepared can be the difference between having a great time, and coming back in the middle of the night freezing cold on foot (a story for another time). I have always tried to think in terms of things that could fail while on the trail, and how serious of a situation does it put me in if they do. From this I determine what I need to carry along to deal with these situations. Here are some things to consider when going for a ride in order to determine what to carry along:

How long is the ride? Is the ride all day or two hours? You will not necessarily need to take along a bunch of snacks if you are only gone for two hours.
How remote is the location of the ride, and how far is it back to the truck? If you are riding a park where it is a confined area with lots of traffic, having a tire fail is not as big of a deal in that you can get your buddies to go back and get what you need at your vehicle. Being on a day long ride in remote Arkansas on a 40 mile ride, having a tire fail can cause you to be spending the night in the wilderness.
What terrain will your ride be in? Will you be riding on nicely groomed trails or in a mud bog? A tow strap on nicely groomed trail will probably not be needed, but in a mud bog it is a must.

What will the weather conditions be, and what could the weather conditions become?
Knowing what clothing to pack is imperative. Some of my trips have taken me to the top of the Rocky mountains where when you start the ride, it is 80, and when you hit the peak, it is 30 with the wind blowing 20mph. Being prepared for the weather can make or break a ride.
