Common Accessories for your ATV
Now you have your ATV, and you are ready to Make it Your Own by accessorizing it for your use. So what are your choices? Good news, there is no limit to accessories for ATVs of all types. We have compiled a list of common accessories to get you started. These can be purchased from any number of stores from your local ATV dealer to online distributors and outdoor stores.
Racks- Front and rear racks on ATVs are standard most of the time. If you don't have any, you will most likely want at least one in the rear. Many accessories attach themselves to the racks, so at least one rack is important.
- Rack Bag- Rack bags come in all shapes, sizes, and price ranges to customize any ATV.
Though manufacturers seem to be giving us more places to store stuff on our ATVs, there is still a need for more. You can choose between hard cases and soft bags depending on what you prefer. If you are planning on a long ride a rack bag is a necessity.
- Bumpers or Grill Guards- Bumpers or a grill guard of some kind are a must on any ATV. These can keep damage to a minimum if something suddenly goes "awry". Whether it is bumping into a tree or needing a nudge to make it through the mud hole, protection in the front and rear is vital.
Fuel Pack- If you plan to do any longer trail rides, you will need to carry along extra fuel. You can certainly strap on the rack gas cans, or you can get a flat fuel pack like the one pictured on the left. We like these fuel packs and use them ourselves as they are out of the way, and they allow other things such as a rack bag to be placed on top of them.
- Skid Plates- Skid plates are armor that attach underneath your quad or side-by-side and which protect the vital parts of your ATV. Many manufacturers put standard skid plates on their ATVs, but aftermarket skid plates are generally better. Plastic skids just don't cut it. It only takes one rock you didn't see to put a dent on the frame or pop your differential or transfer case. If you are planning to do any kind of trail riding, then skid plates are an absolute must, and get metal skids. There are some great skid plate manufacturers out there who use aluminum for their skid plates which offer superior protection for your ATV. It may be the best investment in your ATV you make.
- Winch- This item can be a life saver when needed, and many utility quads and side-by-sides have them. It may be you are in the mud and you are stuck, or it may be you are climbing a hill and something goes wrong. A winch can save you in either situation, and we know from experience. In fact, we have used our winches more in dry, technical riding then we have in the mud. It is one of those accessories you will want when you need it, and you will be angry if you do need it and don't have one. Warn and Ramsey winches are very popular, but there are other winch manufacturers as well.
- Gun Rack- Since we are talking common accessories we have to mention the gun rack for all you hunters. There are a couple of different kinds of gun racks for ATVs. One gun rack type is a simple U shape device similar to a gun rack in a truck which attaches to your ATV racks and holds the gun securely. Almost all of these gun racks have a locking mechanism which keeps the gun from bouncing out. These gun racks will cost $20 and up, and can be bought at almost any sporting goods store or online. Another kind of gun rack is more like a molded plastic gun case which attaches itself to the racks on your ATV. This case completely encases the gun, and protects it from the elements as well as anything you might bump into such as a tree limb. This second case cost more money, but it does offer a much higher level of protection for your gun. These gun racks can cost $70 and up, and can be purchased at many sporting goods stores, from the ATV manufacturers, and online.
- GPS- There are many GPS units on the market but the primary manufacturers include Garmin, Magellan, and Lowrance.
All of these manufacturers make outdoor style GPS units. Prices range from $80 and go up from there. I would highly suggest having a GPS for trail riding on public land where it is easy to get off course and wonder where you are. There are many accessories for these units, including handlebar mounts, and DC cords that will plug into your ATV DC outlet.
- Hand Guards- Hand guards are quite popular for protecting your hands from limbs, wind, and other things which can cause you grief if they hit your hands as you are riding. There are many makes and models which can be bought for all types of ATVs.
- Hand Grips- Many people decide to change the hand-grips on their ATVs. There are different reasons for this, but I would say comfort and look are the two most common. Hand-grips come in all types for levels comfort including heated grips.
These are just a few ideas to get the brain thinking about all of accessories you might consider adding to your ATV. Check out sites like Rocky Mountain ATV or Cabelas to see how many thousands of possibilities you can choice when adding accessories to your ATV.
