2021 Wolverine X2 & Wolverine X4 Sees Enhancements We Wanted & More
We remember the first time we saw the Wolverine X4 shortly before it’s release in 2018. Yamaha had made giant strides in comfort and capability just two years after the release of the first Wolverine side-by-side. Then, we saw the Wolverine X2 come out in 2019 mirroring the Wolverine X4 only built for two. Now in 2021 Yamaha has already made improvements to both the Wolverine X2 & X4 taking these side-by-sides from being really good to truly great.
From the first time we laid eyes on the Wolverine X4 and subsequently the Wolverine X2, we have quietly yearned for a couple of subtle yet important changes which would check a couple of remaining boxes making them one of our first choices in their side-by-side segments. Not only has that happened in the 2021 model year, but Yamaha threw in a couple of other improvements to boot. We are thrilled! Let’s run through the changes on the Wolverine X2 and X4 for model year 2021.
Two Biggest Issues Fixed
Door Opening- One of the biggest issues for us on the Wolverine models from the very first time we climbed aboard, was the door latch location. The door latch plate stuck out in such a way that anyone larger than the width of runway model hit it when climbing into and out of the vehicle. Combined withe the shoulder bolster dimensions, it was not exactly easy to get into the Wolverine. That problem has been solved for 2021! Yamaha has moved the door latch back several inches, and redesigned the shoulder bolster allowing for much more room to enter and exit the vehicle. We would say this is the most significant improvement to the vehicle since it’s introduction just three short years ago.
Pedals- The location and position of both the gas and brake pedals were the other issue we found were “off” in the original Wolverine X2 and X4. Their position just wasn’t comfortable after riding for a while. Yamaha listened and for the 2021model year has made them larger and repositioned them to feel more natural with more comfortable to use. This second improvement knocks our other significant gripe with the Wolverine.
Now we get to other improvements to the Wolverine X2 and Wolverine X4 that just makes these vehicles that much better.
Rear Suspension- The rear suspension has been tinkered with to allow for an additional 1-inch of wheelbase, the rear travel has been increased from 8.9 inches to 9.3-inches, and the rear tread width has been increased 2-inches.
Door- The doors have been improved with softer touch points where your knee rests on the door, and there are speaker cutouts/mounting points in the event you want to add some music to your ride. This is in addition to the revised door setup mentioned above.
Other Interior Changes- The seatbelts can be adjusted without the need to use tools, and the instrument cluster has a new blue backlit display.
Cage & Styling- The ROPS has been redesigned for a more sleek look with rounded corners and change in angle. This along with the door changes gives the overall styling a more sleek and sporty look.
There you have it. Though the list of changes for the 2021 Yamaha Wolverine X2 and Wolverine X4 isn’t a truly long list, it is a substantial list, making the vehicle as a whole better. We are all about these changes because these improvements take away our two main complaints about the Wolverine X2 & X4, and for us that means the aren’t really any remaining items we would change. THAT is something we rarely ever get to write! We tip our hat to Yamaha for listening to both us “crazy” media people, but, more importantly, customer feedback and make adjustments accordingly.
