2019 King of the Hammers UTV Race Recap

 2019 KOH race

The Most Grueling Race of the Year... That's what is said about the annual King of the Hammers off-road race. Racers from all over the globe, along with spectators from all over the globe, descend upon Johnson Valley OHV area in Southern California for a week of racing. It is the annual desert race that puts man and machine to the ultimate test in the rocks and desert. This year, who would come out on top?!

With impressive entry numbers and factory support from Yamaha, Polaris, and Can-Am all in attendance, there was immense pressure on the athletes to perform at this big race. Qualifying started off the weekend on Saturday with intense speed being shown in the UTV class. Mitch Guthrie JR. would be the first place qualifier at the end of the session, and this gave the defending champ a big advantage off the start line on Sunday morning with a clear track and no dust. Over 100 other UTV competitors would follow JR on his quest for a second title.

It was without many mistakes that Mitch Guthrie JR would end up leading the entire race, nary feeling the pressure that you would think with a full field of competitors. He and his co-driver, Jon Crowley, would take the win in their Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity. Little did they know, fellow Polaris RZR teammates were actually pretty close behind them and would round out the podium, producing a RZR sweep of the event.

Both Can-am and Yamaha saw many successes throughout the weekend of racing, but ultimately they couldn't nab the top spot from the veteran racer of Guthrie JR, who happens to be a "veteran" in his early 20's. With 2 championships under his belt so far, Mitch and his Polaris RZR factory team are looking to keep the momentum going next year as they look to repeat as KOH UTV champions.

We'll be just as excited as him to see the UTV racing scene at KOH next year!
